Duke Energy Corporation
One of the largest electric utilities in the United States, Duke Energy generates, transmits and sells electricity and natural gas to millions of homes and businesses across the Carolinas, Florida, Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky. It traces its roots to the Catawba Power Company, a hydroelectric venture on the Catawba River that tobacco tycoon James Buchanan "Buck" Duke and his brother Benjamin joined in 1905. The Duke family's fortune also later helped found Duke University, which shares the same name.
