Essendant is one of the largest wholesale distributors of workplace products in the United States, delivering office supplies, cleaning and sanitation goods, foodservice items, and technology gear to a network of independent dealers and retailers rather than to shoppers directly. Its roots go back to 1921, when three partners bought an office-supply shop called Utility Supply in Chicago. The company ran for decades as United Stationers until it renamed itself Essendant in 2015 — a blend of "essentials" and "ascending" — to reflect its shift beyond paper and pens into a much broader catalog of workplace essentials.
