Expensify, Inc.
A maker of expense-reporting software, Expensify lets people snap a photo of a receipt and automatically turns it into a trackable, reimbursable business expense, used by freelancers and large companies alike. Founded in 2008 by David Barrett in San Francisco, the app began as a "Trojan horse": Barrett actually wanted to build a debit card that would let passersby send money to unhoused people, and created the expense tool just to win over skeptical banks. To his surprise, the side project took off, and its AI receipt-reading feature, Concierge, was introduced and referred to as a "she."
