Alleghany Corporation
A holding company that owns a group of property-and-casualty insurance and reinsurance businesses, including global reinsurer TransRe and specialty insurers RSUI and CapSpecialty. It was founded in 1929 by the Van Sweringen brothers, Cleveland railroad tycoons who built it to control their rail empire, and it became a wholly owned subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway in 2022. Its name is an old spelling of the Allegheny region, a nod to the brothers' railroad roots.
