Allete Inc
A Duluth, Minnesota-based energy company best known as the parent of Minnesota Power, the electric utility that keeps the lights on for iron-mining towns and homes across northeastern Minnesota, powering them with a mix that increasingly draws on hydro and wind. It began in 1906 as the Duluth Edison Electric Co., grew by buying up small timber- and mining-town utilities, and in the 2000s renamed itself ALLETE—a made-up brand meant to signal it was more than just one regional utility.
