Founded in the early 1990s by two engineers working out of their basements, the company was originally called GT Solar before renaming to GT Advanced Technologies in 2011. Its sapphire-growing furnaces once supplied Apple's crystal for device glass, and it was later acquired by the chipmaker onsemi in 2021.
