A Canadian gold miner that dug for the metal across North and South America, Goldcorp was once one of the world's largest gold producers and was best known for its Red Lake mine in Ontario. It was born in 1994 from the merger of three companies, and its longtime leader Rob McEwen came to the helm after his father, who had built a gold-focused investment fund, died in 1986. In a famously bold move, McEwen shocked the secretive mining world in 2000 by posting decades of the company's geological data online and offering prize money to anyone who could point to new gold—a crowdsourcing stunt that helped revive the Red Lake mine. In 2019 the company was bought by Newmont.
