A specialty chemicals and materials company, W.R. Grace makes catalysts used in petroleum refining and plastics production, plus engineered silica that shows up in everyday products like toothpaste. It began in 1854 as a shipping and trading venture founded by Irish immigrant William Russell Grace in Callao, Peru, and grew steamship lines connecting the Americas. Its founder later became the first Catholic mayor of New York City and, during his second term, formally accepted the Statue of Liberty on the city's behalf.
