It grew out of Grand Canyon University, founded in 1949 as Grand Canyon College by Arizona's Southern Baptist Convention; in 2018 the university was sold to a nonprofit. The college's founding was sparked when a pastor placed a silver dollar on a communion table at a Baptist convention, inspiring donations.
