An online food-ordering marketplace, Grubhub lets diners browse restaurants and get meals delivered through its website and app, tying together eaters, eateries, and delivery drivers. Two software engineers in Chicago founded it in 2004 out of frustration with paper menus and phone calls, and the company later merged with rival Seamless in 2013. The name pairs "grub," a centuries-old slang word for food, with "hub" — and co-founder Mike Evans says he started building it on a cold Chicago commute because he was too frustrated to cook and too annoyed to call for pizza.
