A real estate investment trust that owns and operates healthcare properties — senior-living communities from independent living to memory care, outpatient clinics, and post-acute care facilities — leased to care providers across the country. It began in 1970 in Lima, Ohio, when college roommates Frederic "Fritz" Wolfe and Bruce Thompson created the Health Care Fund, widely regarded as the first real estate trust devoted purely to healthcare properties. After years as "Health Care REIT," the company rebranded as Welltower in 2015.
