A maker of engineering simulation software that lets designers test products on a computer before building them — its HyperWorks platform helps automakers, aerospace firms, and other manufacturers predict how parts will hold up under stress, heat, and fluid flow. Founded in 1985 in Troy, Michigan by three engineers, it grew from a consulting shop into a software company. Its name comes from Altair, the brightest star in the constellation Aquila, whose Arabic name means "the flying eagle."
