Imperial Oil Limited
A major Canadian integrated oil company, Imperial Oil digs bitumen and synthetic crude from the oil sands (Kearl, Cold Lake, Syncrude), runs three refineries, and sells fuels at thousands of Esso- and Mobil-branded stations across Canada. Founded in 1880 in London, Ontario, by a group of 16 refiners, it took its name from its first tanker, the Imperial. Its Esso brand is literally pronounced "S-O," a nod to its roots as part of Standard Oil, with ExxonMobil now the majority owner.
