A maker of online learning software, Instructure built Canvas, one of the world's largest learning management systems, used by schools and universities to run courses, assignments, and grading in one cloud-based hub. It began in 2008 when Brigham Young University grad students Brian Whitmer and Devlin Daley, frustrated by clunky rivals like Blackboard, founded the company as a class project. The name blends Latin "instructus" (to teach) with "structure," and the product is named Canvas because it offers educators a blank slate to paint their courses.
