A provider of satellite communications services, Intelsat operates a large fleet of geostationary satellites that beam TV, internet, and mobile coverage to broadcasters, telecom carriers, governments, and airlines around the world. It was created in 1964 as the International Telecommunications Satellite Organization, an intergovernmental consortium whose first satellite, Intelsat I "Early Bird," carried the first live transatlantic TV broadcast in 1965. The name is a shortened form of that original title, and the company went from a public consortium to a private firm when it was sold to investors in 2001.
