Ishares, Inc.
A family of exchange-traded funds (ETFs) owned by BlackRock, iShares lets everyday investors buy baskets of stocks, bonds, and other assets that track major market indexes. The brand began in 1996 as WEBS (World Equity Benchmark Shares), launched by Barclays Global Investors with Morgan Stanley to track foreign stock markets, and was renamed iShares in 2000 — the "i" echoing the era's internet-friendly naming trend, like Apple's iMac. BlackRock bought the business in 2009, and today iShares is one of the world's largest ETF providers.
