iShares Trust
A family of exchange-traded funds (ETFs) managed by BlackRock, letting investors buy a basket of a whole market, sector, or bond index with a single ticker. The iShares brand was born at Barclays Global Investors in 2000 and became part of BlackRock when it bought BGI in 2009. The lowercase "i" in the name followed the dot-com-era habit of "i-" prefixed products, like the gadgets and web services of the day.
