Kirkland Lake Gold Ltd
A Canadian gold miner that ran some of the world's highest-grade underground mines, including the Macassa mine in Ontario and the Fosterville mine in Australia, where rich ore zones carry bird names like Swan and Eagle. The company began in 1988 as Goldpac Investments and took its name from Kirkland Lake, Ontario — a town named after Winnifred Kirkland, a government secretary who never actually visited the place. In 2022 it merged into Agnico Eagle Mines.
