Knife River Corporation
A maker of construction materials, Knife River digs up aggregates—sand, gravel, and crushed stone—and turns them into ready-mix concrete, asphalt, and contracting services used on roads and buildings across 14 U.S. states. It got its start in 1917 supplying coal in North Dakota near the Knife River (its namesake), then shifted to aggregates in 1992 and spun off from parent MDU Resources in 2023 to stand on its own. Fun fact: its roots are in coal mining, a world away from the gravel yards it runs today.
