A health and specialty insurance holding company, American Independence Corp. once sold coverage such as short-term medical, dental, vision, and pet insurance through its subsidiary, Independence American Insurance Company. Its story is a quirky twist: it began life as SoftNet Systems, an internet-services company, before switching into insurance in 2002 and renaming itself. In 2016 it was taken private by its parent, Independence Holding Company.
