A wireless carrier that built its business on no-contract, no-credit-check cell phone service under the Cricket brand, aimed at budget-conscious customers who wanted flat-rate unlimited plans. Leap Wireless was spun off from the San Diego tech giant Qualcomm in 1999, and its first Cricket store opened in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The company was later bought by AT&T, which kept the Cricket name for its prepaid service.
