Level 3 Communications Inc
A builder and operator of one of the world's largest internet backbone networks, Level 3 Communications carried data traffic for businesses and carriers across North America, Latin America, Europe, and Asia, including tens of thousands of miles of undersea fiber-optic cable. It grew out of the Omaha construction giant Peter Kiewit Sons', which spun off its non-construction interests in the 1980s and formally launched Level 3 in 1997. The name comes from "Layer 3" of the OSI networking model, the layer that routes data across the internet. In 2017 the company was acquired by CenturyLink, now Lumen Technologies.
