American Superconductor Corporation
A maker of power-control equipment for electric grids, wind turbines, and warships, American Superconductor builds products like D-VAR voltage stabilizers, wind-turbine electrical systems, and high-temperature superconductor (HTS) wire used in naval degaussing systems for the U.S. and Royal Canadian navies. Founded in 1987 by MIT materials scientists (one reportedly started it in his kitchen), the company's Amperium HTS wire is nicknamed the "optical fiber of power" because a thin ribbon carries far more electricity than copper of the same size.
