A managed healthcare company that coordinates behavioral health, substance-use treatment, and specialty care for health plans, employers, and government programs, including military and veteran services through its Magellan Federal division. It began in 1969 as Charter Medical, a psychiatric hospital chain in Georgia, and took the name Magellan after a 1990s restructuring — a nod to the explorer Ferdinand Magellan, fitting for a firm navigating complex health journeys. Since 2022 it has operated as part of Centene Corporation.
