A maker of automotive parts and systems, Magna International is one of the world's largest auto suppliers. It designs and builds everything from seats and mirrors to complete powertrains for carmakers around the globe. The company began in 1957 when Austrian immigrant Frank Stronach opened a one-man tool-and-die shop in a rented Toronto garage; it took the name Magna—Latin for 'great'—after a 1969 merger. A fun quirk: through its Magna Steyr unit, it assembles entire vehicles for other automakers.
