A Toronto-based financial services company that sells life and health insurance, wealth management, and banking products, doing business as Manulife in Canada and Asia and as John Hancock in the United States. It began in 1887 as The Manufacturers Life Insurance Company, a name chosen to back Canada's pro-industry "National Policy" — and its very first president was Sir John A. Macdonald, the country's founding prime minister.
