Marathon Oil Corp
An American energy company that explored for and produced crude oil, natural gas, and oil sands, with operations spanning U.S. shale plays like the Eagle Ford, Bakken, and Permian basins as well as Equatorial Guinea. It began in 1887 in Lima, Ohio, as The Ohio Oil Company, a Standard Oil affiliate that regained independence after the 1911 antitrust breakup. The "Marathon" name came from a chain of gas stations it acquired in 1930, and in 2011 it split off its refining arm as the separate Marathon Petroleum. In 2024, ConocoPhillips acquired the company.
