A global engineering and construction firm that designs and builds the heavy infrastructure of the energy world—offshore oil platforms, subsea pipelines, refineries, and LNG plants—using a fleet of specialized marine vessels. It began in 1923 when 24-year-old Ralph Thomas McDermott won a contract to build 50 wooden drilling rigs in Texas, and he named the company after his father, John Raymond "J. Ray" McDermott, who joined as a partner. The company installed the first fixed steel oil platform built out of sight of land in the Gulf of Mexico in 1947.
