Merrimack Pharmaceuticals was a Cambridge, Massachusetts biotech that used computer modeling to design targeted cancer drugs. Its signature product, Onivyde, a liposome-wrapped version of the chemotherapy drug irinotecan, treats advanced pancreatic cancer and earned FDA approval in 2015. Founded in 2000 by scientists from MIT and Harvard, it took its name from the Merrimack River, whose Native American name is said to mean "place of strong current." After selling Onivyde to the French drugmaker Ipsen in 2017, the company later dissolved in 2024.
