It began in 1994 as Centex Home Equity, a unit of the construction giant Centex, was sold and renamed Nationstar Mortgage in 2006, and rebranded as Mr. Cooper in 2017. The name isn't a real person — it came from focus groups where borrowers recalled good service coming from a specific helpful person, like a trusted neighbor.
