A maker of tools that help scientists read the molecular "messages" inside cells and tissues, NanoString builds instruments and assays used in medical research. Its best-known products are the nCounter Analysis System, which uses color-coded molecular barcodes to count genes, and the GeoMx and CosMx platforms for spatial biology. It began in 2003 as a spin-out from the Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle, founded by Krassen Dimitrov, Amber Ratcliffe, and Dwayne Dunaway. Fun fact: the name blends "nano," for the tiny scale, with "string," because its technology works with strands of DNA tagged with colorful barcodes—a name the founders reportedly spent a long time debating.
