A major private education company in China, New Oriental runs test-preparation courses for exams like TOEFL, IELTS, GRE, and the Gaokao, plus language and lifelong-learning programs. It began in 1993 when English teacher Yu Minhong, after failing to win a US scholarship, started tutoring students from his own classroom. The Chinese name, Xīn Dōngfāng, means "New East" — and Yu credits his bricklayer father's habit of collecting stray bricks as the inspiration for building his business one small step at a time.
