It began in 1986 as Neptune Intelligence Computer Engineering, a name whose initials became NICE when the founders—drawing on backgrounds in Israeli intelligence—turned it into a maker of call-recording and analytics systems. A fun quirk: the name has nothing to do with being nice or the French city of Nice—it's just an acronym that stuck.
