A biopharmaceutical company that develops treatments for diseases driven by the body's complement system — part of the immune system — including SYFOVRE, the first FDA-approved therapy for geographic atrophy (a form of age-related vision loss), and EMPAVELI for rare blood and kidney conditions. It began in 2009 as Potentia Pharmaceuticals in Louisville, Kentucky, later renaming itself Apellis — a nod to the Greek painter Apelles — before moving to Massachusetts and listing on Nasdaq. In 2026 it agreed to be acquired by Biogen.
