Oi S.a.
One of Brazil's best-known telecom names, Oi grew out of the 1998 breakup of the state-run Telebrás system, born as Tele Norte Leste (later Telemar) before adopting the friendly Portuguese greeting "Oi" — meaning "hi" — as its brand. For years it ran mobile, broadband, and pay-TV services across much of the country, and it still keeps its Oi Soluções arm, which builds digital and connectivity solutions for businesses and public bodies. The cheerful name was chosen to feel approachable in a market once known for stuffy, bureaucratic phone companies.
