Onyx Pharmaceuticals Inc
A biopharmaceutical company that developed cancer medicines, Onyx made Nexavar (for kidney and liver cancer) and Kyprolis (for multiple myeloma), later folding into drug giant Amgen. It was founded in 1992 by venture capitalist Kevin Kinsella and biochemist Frank McCormick in South San Francisco. Its name comes from the onyx gemstone, whose Greek root means "claw" or "fingernail."
