The company grew out of a 2013 merger with BioSante Pharmaceuticals, and its origins trace to an earlier Cortrophin Gel first approved in the 1950s but discontinued decades later. ANI brought that long-vanished drug back to U.S. shelves after buying its rights, and no one has ever explained what the initials "ANI" actually stand for.
