Pfizer Inc.
A maker of medicines and vaccines, Pfizer produces well-known drugs like the blood thinner Eliquis, the Prevnar pneumonia vaccines, the Covid shot Comirnaty, the antiviral Paxlovid, and cancer treatments Ibrance and Xtandi, used by patients around the world. It was founded in 1849 in Brooklyn by German cousins Charles Pfizer, a chemist, and Charles Erhart, a confectioner, who began by coating a bitter worm medicine in almond-flavored toffee candy. Its most famous discovery, the erectile-dysfunction drug Viagra, was a happy accident—originally developed as a heart medication for angina.
