Power Corporation of Canada
A holding company that owns some of Canada's biggest financial-services brands, including Canada Life, Irish Life, and IG Wealth Management. It was founded in 1925 by two Montreal stockbrokers, A.J. Nesbitt and P.A. Thomson, who created it to keep Canadian hydroelectric utilities out of the hands of an American speculator. The "Power" in its name is a leftover from those utility days — the company later sold off its electricity assets and became a finance powerhouse instead.
