A technology-powered real estate brokerage that lets people buy, sell, and rent homes through its website and app, backed by salaried in-house agents rather than commission-based contractors. It grew out of Appliance Computing, Inc., founded in 2002 by David Eraker and others after Eraker's frustrating Seattle house hunt convinced him the market needed more transparency. The name "Redfin" was deliberately chosen as a "great empty vessel"—a memorable word the founders could build a brand around.
