Rentech Nitrogen Partners, L.p.
A maker of nitrogen-based fertilizers, Rentech Nitrogen Partners ran a large plant in East Dubuque, Illinois, that turned natural gas into anhydrous ammonia and urea ammonium nitrate (UAN) — products farmers across the Midwest spread on their fields to boost crop yields. The facility had a long chain of owners, passing from Royster-Clark to Agrium before Rentech, Inc. bought it in 2006 and spun the fertilizer business into this partnership in 2011, listing it on the New York Stock Exchange. The parent's name, Rentech, is short for "Renewable Technologies," a nod to its roots in synthetic-fuel research.
