SPDR Series Trust
A fund family that houses a collection of exchange-traded funds, or ETFs, managed by State Street Global Advisors. SPDR—short for Standard & Poor's Depositary Receipts and pronounced "spider"—traces back to 1993, when State Street launched SPY, the first ETF ever listed in the United States, tracking the S&P 500. In 2007 the company folded its other fund lines, like Dow DIAMONDS, into the single SPDR brand that investors know today.
