Smith & Nephew Plc
A British maker of medical technology that helps surgeons and doctors mend the human body, from hip and knee implants and surgical robotics to wound-care dressings used in hospitals worldwide. It began in 1856 when pharmacist Thomas James Smith opened a small chemist shop in Hull, England, selling cod liver oil to local hospitals. The "Nephew" in its name arrived in 1896, when his nephew Horatio Nelson Smith joined and steered the business toward bandages and surgical dressings — a change that shaped everything that followed.
