Splunk makes software that collects and searches the huge streams of "machine data" — logs, metrics and sensor readings — generated by servers, apps and devices, turning digital chaos into dashboards and alerts. Large organizations use it to monitor their systems and spot cyber threats. Founded in 2003 in San Francisco by three engineers, the name is a shortened play on "spelunking," the hobby of exploring caves, a nod to the murky data they once had to tunnel through with a virtual headlamp. It joined networking giant Cisco in 2024.
