A maker of air-dried meat snacks, Stryve Foods brings biltong—a South African snack dried rather than cooked, so it's naturally high in protein and free of sugar and preservatives—to the American market under brands like Stryve and Kalahari. Founded in 2017 by sports-nutrition veterans and a former NFL player, the Plano, Texas company later folded in Kalahari Snacks, whose own founders were inspired by a trip to South Africa. The name is a play on "strive," chosen to make the word mean "healthy snacking."
