Athenahealth, Inc.
A healthcare technology company that provides cloud-based software and services to medical practices, hospitals, and health systems across the United States. Its flagship platform, athenaOne, bundles electronic health records, medical billing, and patient-engagement tools into a single suite used by doctors' offices to manage care and get paid. Founded in 1997 by Jonathan Bush and Todd Park, the company grew out of their failed chain of birthing clinics named Athena Women's Health, after the Greek goddess of wisdom; when billing became a nightmare, they wrote software to fix it — and that software became the business. One of its flagship billing products is even named after the goddess who, in myth, sprang fully grown from the head of Zeus.
