The company began in weaving: Sakichi Toyoda invented an automatic loom, and his son Kiichiro used the proceeds to launch an auto division in 1933, with Toyota Motor Co. officially founded in 1937. The name was changed from "Toyoda" to "Toyota" because the Japanese characters for "Toyota" take eight strokes, an auspicious lucky number.
