U.s. Silica Holdings, Inc.
A major American producer of silica sand, the raw material behind everything from glass and foundry castings to the proppant used to crack open oil and gas wells. Its roots stretch back to the late 1800s, when Henry Harrison Hunter hand-mined unusually pure sand near Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, and won a blue ribbon at the Chicago World's Fair for it. Today's company was born from the 1987 merger of two old rivals, Pennsylvania Glass Sand and Ottawa Silica—the former taking the U.S. Silica name a year earlier.
