Vale S.a.
A Brazilian mining giant and one of the world's largest producers of iron ore, Vale also digs up nickel, copper, cobalt, and manganese used in everything from steelmaking to batteries. It was founded in 1942 as Companhia Vale do Rio Doce, a state-owned company named after the Doce River valley where it began mining, and privatized in 1997. It runs the Carajás mine in the Amazon, the largest iron ore mine on the planet, and shortened its name to 'Vale' in 2009 because the word is easy to recognize in many languages.
