A Washington, D.C.-based biopharmaceutical company that develops medicines for brain and nervous-system conditions. Its products include Hetlioz, a treatment for a rare sleep disorder in which totally blind people's internal body clocks drift because they cannot perceive light, and Fanapt, an antipsychotic for schizophrenia. Founded in 2003 by a Greek-American scientist who worked on the Human Genome Project, the company takes its name from the Vanda, a genus of orchids.
